In the last day, most of us have
Used a device the size of a graham cracker to send messages and pictures or make voice or video calls to people miles way from us
Watched a program that was being broadcast via satellites orbiting the planet
Driven somewhere at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour
Washed our hands with hot water available on demand in an instant
Stored food in temperature controlled cabinets that keep our meats and dairy products chilled or even frozen
In other words… We used the phone, watched tv, drove a car, used the sink, and used the fridge. So what?
That’s the craziest part of all—that we didn’t think twice about any of it.
Any one of these things would blow the minds of the overwhelming majority of humans who have ever lived. For us, it’s all commonplace. That’s just how the human mind works. That which we repeatedly see quickly becomes taken for granted.
With all that in mind, read Romans 8:1 again:
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
If you’ve been a Christian for any amount of time, you’ve probably read and heard that one countless times. It’s easy to let our eyes pass over it and take it as just as mundane as a video chat with somebody across the planet.
But just because we’re used to it, it doesn’t make it ordinary or boring. And though it’s hard to be hit with the same truth just as heavily the 100th time you hear it as you were the first time, it’s important not to ever take it for granted.
We were condemned, bound for eternity in hell. Even worse, we had no ability to escape condemnation. And, we would still be condemned, except for one factor. We are now in Christ, who turned the tables by condemning sin instead (8:3).
You’ve heard this. You know this. But don’t ever let yourself take it for granted.
