46. The Priesthood
The collective group of those who serve God as a profession. The concept of priesthood predates Aaron and the Law of Moses, as Melchizedek was the first priest seen in Scripture (Genesis 14). Moses’ father-in-law Jethro was also a priest of Midian who knew God (Exodus 18).
However, beginning in Exodus 28, God designated Aaron and his sons as the priests of Israel. As such, they were in charge of the sacrifices, worship, and keeping the tabernacle (and later the temple). They were given the rest of their Levite brethren as assistants in their work in Numbers 3.
In the New Testament, Christians are called a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9) and a kingdom of priests (Revelation 1:6). Verses like Romans 12:1-2 and Hebrews 13:10-15 depict the lives and worship of Christians to be our priestly service in the New Covenant.
