The Great Commission
Jesus’ command to His disciples to take His message to the world and make more disciples, given shortly before His ascension. Matthew 28:18-20 is the passage most closely associated with the term, though Mark 16:15-16, Luke 24:46-48, and Acts 1:8 give similar charges to go and preach.
Though typically taken as our charge to evangelize, Jesus’ words in Matthew go beyond just evangelism to include teaching those who are baptized to observe His commandments.
Taken together, these elements give us the church’s primary role in the world. The book of Acts depicts the way the first Christians carried out this Commission.
Disciples
A disciple is a student or follower of another. Jesus had a number of disciples during His time on Earth, and upon His ascension He commanded His disciples to go forth and make more disciples. It is not enough to be a Christian in name only: one must be a disciple, a true follower of Jesus.
