Place Another Brick Today
The Bulletin, 10/22/25
You wouldn’t be out of line to be dejected about the trajectory of the world around us. Our once-great nation has declined greatly in the last 80 years or so, and Christian morality has become an afterthought in our culture.
Fortunately, the Bible gives us examples of people who lived through similar times of their own.
Perhaps none of them are more relevant to our current moment than Nehemiah, the great rebuilder of Jerusalem’s walls. He heard of his homeland’s horrible state and wept, fasted, and prayed about his concerns. You and I have done the same things out of concern for our own nation.
We may not have a direct line to powerful people and their resources in the way Nehemiah did, but we can still learn from his example. When the time came to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall, an enormous task stood before him and his associates. They knew they couldn’t do such a monumental task overnight.
But what they did provides a valuable lesson for us.
Each man went to work building the wall before his own house (see ch. 3). If you want to fix the world, start laying bricks in front of your own house. Get your own spiritual life in order. If you’re married, encourage your spouse in his or her walk with God. If you have children, make sure they are growing in knowledge, wisdom, and the love of God. If you’re doing all of those things, then start building up your fellow Christians. Start telling the lost about Jesus.
You can’t fix everything, but you can build the wall in front of your own house. It might not feel like much in the face of such a steep uphill battle with the world. But the more Christians we have taking up the work and building their portion of the wall, the more we can change things, one day at a time.
