Manna & Quail
The food provided for Israel in their wilderness wanderings (Exodus 16). It seems God only provided quail on the first night in Exodus 16, as they later complained about the steady diet of manna and were given it to the degree “it becomes loathsome to you” in Numbers 11.
The food was provided after one of Israel’s many instances of grumbling at what they believed to be Moses and Aaron’s poor leadership. Though they had seen God perform all manner of wonders in Egypt, they continued to doubt the plan and complained at nearly every juncture. They are often referenced as an example of a lack of faith and an unwillingness to give thanks and trust God for His past provisions.
In John 6:30-59, Jesus compared Himself to manna as “the bread which has come down out of heaven.” Just as manna was the bread which kept Israel alive, Jesus is the Bread of Life on which we must feast so as to never hunger or thirst (John 6:35).
