#4 - Adam and Eve
The first two humans, Adam and Eve, were handmade by God from the dust (Adam) and the man’s side (Eve). Adam was placed in Eden to care for the Garden and to have dominion over all the earth, including every other creature. He was also to be fruitful and multiply.
To accomplish both of these missions, and so as to not be left alone, he required a helper suitable for him and his mission. So God created a woman from his side and made them one flesh.
#5 - Image
Man’s special designation in God’s creation. In Genesis 1:26, God purposed to “make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” This does not mean we look exactly like God: He is Spirit (John 4:24) and chooses to present Himself visually in numerous ways throughout Scripture.
What does it mean, then, to be made in His image and likeness? One theory is that the terminology points to man’s possession of a soul. Another points to the use of “image” and “likeness” in relation to idols in the Old Testament to argue that bearing the image of another means to be a symbolic representation: for example, Adam’s dominion over all the other created beings was his way of bearing God’s image. Both explanations have merit, and the true meaning is likely a combination of the two.
It is because we are made in the image of God that our lives have so much value, as shown in Genesis 9:6. There we learn that murder is worthy of the death penalty because we are made in His image.
#6 - Dominion
Man’s charge over all creation in Genesis 1:28. Adam’s mission was to fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over it, and Eve was given to him to aid in this mission. This is what it means to have dominion, or to fulfill what is sometimes called the dominion mandate. Adam was to be a king, and the earth was to be his kingdom.
Because of his sin, Adam never fulfilled his mandate as God intended. Yet through the cross and the resurrection, Jesus is in the process of fulfilling this mandate. What Adam could not do, Jesus is doing, and His saints will rule with Him (Psalm 2:9; Revelation 2:26, 27).
