Spiritual beings in rebellion against God and ruled by Satan (Matthew 12:24-26). Also called unclean spirits. Possession by demons was a widespread issue in the time of Jesus’ ministry and into the book of Acts, though Jesus and His disciples cast out many of them.

In Matthew 12:28-29, Jesus explained that His work of casting out demons proved the kingdom had come upon that generation, as He was binding Satan to take everything in “the house.” In 1 Corinthians 10:20-21, Paul said pagan idols were demons.
